In the latest installment of iGaming Voice, AffPapa interviewed Laura Wolf, the Affiliate Manager of Mate Affiliates, who shared her insights on the importance of learning to grow in the industry’s affiliate marketing space and talked about how new professionals entering the sphere can start their careers with the best companies.

Yeva: As the iGaming affiliate marketing space is quite competitive, it is important for professionals to be willing to learn and develop their skills to succeed in it. What resources would you recommend for people to learn about the industry, Laura?

I believe that effective communication is one of the most important skills for an affiliate manager and if you are a bit of a “people person”, well, you are already halfway to mastering this thing. The rest can be learned more easily I would say.

I’ve been lucky enough to kickstart my career with a team of professionals who already had experience in the industry. Their knowledge and experience have always been my best resources. Mentorship is like gold in our industry because, let’s face it, you won’t find this kind of insight in your school textbooks

I also find LinkedIn to be incredibly useful. I’ve built a community with industry professionals who are sharing a lot of useful information daily.

Yeva: Having been in the affiliate marketing side of the iGaming industry for quite a few years, how were you able to determine which iGaming affiliate program was best suited for you? How can junior affiliate managers know which operator is the best fit for them?

To be honest, I think it is almost impossible to determine which operator/affiliate program is the best for you. It’s like any other job, it can look perfect from the outside, but you won’t know for sure until you take the plunge. You just have to try and don’t be afraid to move on if it’s not a good fit for you.
I consider myself very lucky because this is my first job in the industry and I honestly think that I couldn’t find a better fit.

Yeva: If you had to start your career in iGaming over, what do you think you would do differently, Laura? What do you wish you knew when first starting to work in the sector?

Honestly, I wouldn’t change a thing. I quickly found the role which I think is right for me and I found a great company that I am glad to be a part of.

Yeva: Continuing on the topic of starting over, what piece of advice would you give past you, who was just starting to work in the industry? What would you advise young professionals just entering the sector nowadays?

The only advice I would like to give is to be more open, don’t be shy, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Networking is a game-changer in this industry, and there are so many people who are willing to offer valuable information that is otherwise really hard to come by.

Yeva: In your experience, what have been some of the most common misconceptions new affiliate managers have had about the industry? How have these misconceptions evolved over the past few years?

New affiliate managers often enter the gambling industry with different misconceptions.

In the past, some believed that affiliate marketing in the gambling industry was a quick and easy way to make money. However, over the years, increased competition and stricter regulations have made things a bit more challenging. Newcomers have realized that success requires dedication, strategy, and continuous adaptation to change.

Also, new affiliate managers may have assumed that all the information they needed for this job was easily available. However, the complexity of the industry and evolving regulations, means that staying informed is not easy and it requires ongoing effort. Newcomers now understand the importance of continuously learning and staying updated.

Yeva: What do you think holds back junior affiliate managers from achieving success in the industry the most? How do you think they can overcome those challenges to grow their careers?

As I’ve mentioned before, being shy can put a speed bump on your road to success. In our industry, especially if you’re rocking the role of an affiliate manager, it’s really important to be friendly, confident, and bold. In the beginning, I was quite timid, and this was holding me back, especially at conferences, which are a really important part of this job.

Yeva: How did you get started in the iGaming industry, Laura? What drove you to pursue a career in the affiliate management side of the sector?

I ended up in the industry very randomly. After a few years of living abroad, I’ve decided to move back to my home country to look for a new challenge. My best friend was already working in the company, and she thought that I would be a good fit so she recommended me. I knew absolutely nothing about the industry, and I was a little bit skeptical at the beginning, but everything turned out great, and truth be told, I am pretty sure I’ve found my forever home in this industry.

In just a few months after starting, I found myself in the role of an affiliate manager and after almost 3 years, it still seems like the perfect match for me.

Yeva: As we get to our last question, I think it is time for us to change our topic of discussion a little bit. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? Do you have any hobbies that you could share with our audience?

Unfortunately, I don’t have that much time for hobbies anymore. The main reason is that I really love to sleep in the morning so I start my workday fashionably late and wrap it up when the others are already in the middle of their after-work activities.

So I don’t have that much free time during the week, but I really love to hang out with my friends, I love outdoor activities, I love watching movies, and I try to travel as much as I can.
