GambleAware awards £350k to gambling stigmatization research

GambleAware has recently donated 350 thousand Pounds to fund research on the effects of gambling discrimination and stigma.

The charity’s donation has gone to the University of Wolverhampton and the UK’s National Center of Social Research. Both organizations will be working with the Liverpool John Moores University to uncover the effects of stigma on problem gamblers.

The study is going to be looking at how different members of society stigmatize and discriminate against problem gamblers. It will analyze the behavior of people working in the gambling, healthcare, and media industries, as well as people working at charities and people closely relating to someone with gambling problems.

Additionally, the organizations will attempt to find which communities are likely to be more affected by discrimination and stigmatization problems than others and will aim to find out the reasons behind it. The study will also take a look at the experiences of people who have gambling problems in addition to other tough circumstances, such as homelessness, mental disorders, or substance abuse problems.

Lastly, the study will aim to identify effective ways of countering stigma and discrimination against gambling problems. GambleAware stated that its findings will be finalized and made available sometime next year.

The Chief Commissioning Officer of GambleAware, Anna Hargrave remarked:

“At this time there is a limited amount of data on stigma and discrimination against problem gamblers in the United Kingdom. To counter its negative effects we need research on stigmatization, which will also help us counter the effects of the discrimination stemming from it. Apart from causing mental health issues in people discriminated against, it can also cause these problem gamblers to be hesitant to seek help, which will make the challenges even worse over time.”

The topic will be one of GambleAware’s main areas of focus in both 2023 and 2024 as the charity aims to continue reducing the impact of gambling harms in the United Kingdom.
