The Malta Gaming Authority’s latest annual analysis covers the regulator’s achievements in the year and the performance of the country’s gambling industry.

The regulator’s report started off with an overview of its supervisory efforts, which included 28 audits for compliance and over 220 general reviews in the period. The MGA also carried out several AML and CTF audits on behalf of the country’s financial analysis authority, the FIAU.

Following the regulator’s audits, a total of ten licensees were warned while six had their licenses revoked. The MGA also issued 16 fines and 3 regulatory settlements which resulted in a total of just under 180 thousand euros being collected by the regulator. FIAU’s reviews, on the other hand, resulted in 25 penalties and a total of just under 740 thousand euros of collected fines.

The report then mentioned that the MGA received over 40 license applications in the year. In total, the regulator issued 31 certifications and rejected 21 applications in 2022. The MGA also conducted responsible gambling audits on 85 websites, as a result of which it published 17 notices and issued 30 information letters to various businesses.

Lastly, the report highlighted the MGA’s international collaboration efforts, which included a total of over 80 incoming and almost 100 outgoing partnership requests in the year. The regulator sent out over 220 alerts to various industry authorities and organizations, over 160 of which were directed at sports organizations.

The MGA continues its excellent international collaboration efforts, with some of the most recent instances involving a visit from the UKGC’s CEO and Executive Director to discuss future partnership prospects, which the regulator published at the same time as its 2022 report, and a meeting with a delegation from the Ghanaian gambling authority at the end of last month.
