Ontario bids for gambling self-exclusion

Ontario is looking for provider of a centralized online gambling self-exclusion system.

The self-exclusion system would allow people to prohibit themselves from all of the province’s approved gambling websites with just one request.  By prohibiting them from placing any bets at all, this technique seeks to assist those who struggle with gambling in taking a break from it.

The organization in charge of this project, iGaming Ontario (iGO), has issued a call for ideas for a software-as-a-service-based self-exclusion system. Proposals must be submitted by April 24th.

The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation’s (OLG) iGaming website should be smoothly integrated with the system, as should all other Ontario iGaming operators’ platforms. It should also make it simple for anyone nineteen years of age and older to set up and maintain a self-exclusion profile. The successful bidder is also required to put in place user-friendly procedures for KYC identity verification, registration, renewal, and reinstatement that provide supporting data.

Since its April 2022 launch, Ontario’s iGaming sector has grown to include over fifty operators and about seventy distinct websites for online poker, sports betting, and casinos. 1.2 million active player accounts wagered 17.2bn dollars at these sites in the quarter that ended on December 31. This generated 658m dollars in total gaming income, of which the province kept roughly twenty percent.

This centralized self-exclusion mechanism is seen as an essential component of responsible gaming, especially in a market as competitive as Ontario’s where several operators are fighting for patronage. It attempts to give people a reliable and useful tool to control their gambling habits at all of the province’s licensed gambling sites.
